The world has been celebrating World Dignity Day for quite some time and South Africa has finally gotten with the program. Our school was one of 10 schools that participated in a competition on said day and was one of 4 schools that came out on top, with our own Khiran Butt, in Grade 11, winning a trip to Robben Island. Our other learners received certificates for their participation, while our teachers received trophies. The teachers involved were:
Farewell breakfast for Mr. Wilson Kajani
The grade 12’s started off by asking all the teachers to swop places with them for the day, with the teachers as learners and the kids as 80’s/90’s versions of themselves. They entered through a guard of honour made by the teachers and addressed the school before awarding each teacher with a diploma listing all the reasons they will be missed and remembered. The day ended without incident so these learners made us proud.
Westville Alumni , facilitated the Assembly on Monday 12 August 2019.
While all were sleeping late, during the school holidays, Mrs Cheryldene Fortuin was receiving training on a new subject that will be introduced at Grade 8 level, Digital Technology. Westville is excited about embarking on this new journey and we appreciate this teacher’s efforts in steering the ship for us. Our children will reap the benefits of all your extra time given to equip yourself with all that is needed for this interesting, new subject.
A lovely retirement luncheon was held by the teachers to say goodbye to Mr Wilson Kajani and Ralph Geswint on 14th June 2019. Mr Kajani was unable to attend but Mr Geswint was present. Speeches were made, tears were shed and it was a memorable occasion all around. All the teachers attended, as well as the School Governing Body chairperson, Mr Bevan Brown. Mr Geswint ended off the occasion with beautiful words, “Westville is like family to me. We shared a lot and learnt a lot from each other.”
The Zenex Foundation spoiled our Grade 12, Maths and Science learners, with an all expenses paid trip to the Grade 12 School’s Festival that kicks off the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. They earned their ticket onto the bus by attending workshops to grow their knowledge and writing the De Beers English Olympiad. Jared Johnson received a Bronze Award, while Sherizaan Elie, Kim Calvert and Kiran Bosman earned Merit Awards, respectively. Mrs Saafia Khan, Head of Department of Languages and Life Orientation at Westville, accompanied them on this trip, which lasted six days. They stayed at the postgraduate residence at Rhodes University and were taken to a number of shows and workshops everyday. All teachers and learners, from the many schools, bonded like a family. A lovely time was had by all.
In this day and age, where parental involvement is waning, we, as a school, have decided to honour the parents of the top 10 learners who have prioritised their children’s schooling. We did this with an evening where the Grade Heads handed out certificates of appreciation to the parents, the principal and School Governing Body Chairperson thanked them and they were then treated to a finger meal. We hope that this will encourage other parents to rise up and encourage their children to make the top 10.
